It can be applied to everyday activities such as walking, sitting, working at a computer and playing sport. The Technique is taught through a series of one to one lessons. Regular introductory group workshops are also held at the centre. Michelle Cole, the Alexander Technique teacher, has a website with more information about the Technique at www.gooduse.com

Pilates
Pilates is a system of movements which focus on developing core stability, enabling your whole body to move with greater ease. The exercises are slow, fluid and controlled, often co-ordinating the movement and breath. Pilates exercises stabilise, strengthen and mobilise and help improve flexibility. Practising pilates regularly will allow you to enjoy greater balance, co-ordination and a posture that will promote a healthier body. Our teachers are excellent and you will benefit enormously from the individual attention, corrective alignment, and perceptive monitoring possible when working in a small class. We currently have five pilates classes per week. Please call or email for availability and times.'

Lower Back Pain
Yoga therapy is particularly suitable for people with back problems. It
offers a holistic approach to illness, which nourishes and strengthens the
body and mind. Since it is non-invasive, the person always remains in
control. Because of the wide range of yoga techniques available, it is
suitable for anyone regardless of age or fitness, and is safe for people in
severe pain.
Yoga does not seek to offer a "quick fix", but through its combination of
specific physical exercises, breathing practises and relaxation, yoga can
help most people with back problems.
It can reduce the physical and mental tension associated with back pain,
improve flexibility and mobility, strengthen muscles, improve posture and
even if the pain persists, help you to manage it.
Yoga can also be used as a preventative regime, to avoid, or reduce the
severity of, back pain in the future.
A one-to-one assessment, in which the Therapist will take a case history and
conduct a physical examination of your spine. This will enable you to work
out with the practitioner the best way forward.
The QS offers the options described below, for people with lower back
problems, depending on the severity of their symptoms. (If your problem is
in the upper back, or neck, you can follow the procedures below, but we may
recommend a different type of class.
Two options:
- further one-to-one sessions
- a small class for moderate to severe LBP
Gentle Yoga Sessions
By taking a slow but steady pace this Yoga practise will have a gentle
though effective approach which will make them very low risk.
Since these classes will be low in attendance numbers individual attention
will be given and the therapist will care for personal difficulties. During
these classes we will work on yoga positions and series of positions
carefully chosen by the therapist to achieve more flexibility, strength,
relaxation and improve breathing.
